One could say that Mambo is the predecessor of the famous Joomla CMS. Read on to know more about how Mambo "became" Joomla.

Mambo is an open source content management system (CMS) or to be more specific, a web content management system (WCMS). It is built with PHP and allows dynamic websites to be managed easily by user with standard computer literacy. This allows companies or organizations to administrate the content of their website without knowledge of HTML, CSS or PHP.

Mambo was quite succesfull and popular until 2006. On August 17th, 2005 a fork of Mambo called Joomla was launched. This was the result of disagreements between the non-profit foundation behind Mambo, Miro International Pvt Ltd, and the development team. The development team claimed that many of the provisions fo the foundation structure went against previous agreements and violated core open source values.

This conflict made waves in the whole open source community not only the Mambo community itself. It started a controversy within the free software community about the definition of "open source".

As far as Mambo was concerned, it lost most of it's developers, contributers and users. Most of the community switched to Joomla and Mambo became quite insignificant on the CMS market.

While Mambo still exists it has lost it's community and an open source project without community isn't worth anything. Joomla on the other hand has become the most popular Open Source CMS available.
